It took a lot to shock Fargo. To shock him to where he was at a loss for words. To where he could only stare in complete bewilderment as the source of his shock mocked him with gruff laughter.

“I suggest you lower the rifle,” Leon Hinkle said. “All I need do is snap my fingers and you’ll be torn to pieces.” He raised his hand with his thumb against his fingers, ready to do just that.

The hellhounds were primed to attack. Their bodies taut, they growled and snapped, bloodlust gleaming in their eyes.

Fargo lowered the Henry.

Beyond the hybrids other Hinkles appeared. The hellhounds did not turn and attack. They did not even look at them. The hellhounds were watching Leon Hinkle, their lord and master, awaiting his command.

“I wish you could have seen your face just now,” Leon said. “It was downright hilarious.” He grinned from ear to ear. “Can’t tell you how much I’ve been lookin’ forward to this. You have a lot comin’ to you for what you did to my boys and for tryin’ to steal my woman out from under me.”

From the shed came Devona’s angry, “I am not your woman, damn you!”

Leon gazed at the opening. “Now, now, my dear. That’s not fit language for a lady. Come on out. And bring the child. Have no fear. My pets won’t harm you so long as I’m around.”

Fargo’s shock had finally worn off. “Your pets?”

“Yes, indeed.” Leon placed his hand on the head of the biggest hellhound and the animal nuzzled his leg as would a tame dog. “I’ll make it all clear to you soon enough.” He took the Henry. “You might be wonderin’ why I don’t kill you outright. But where’s the fun in that?”

Leon gestured and the pack parted. Tyrel and Clyde and Arvil came through, and while Clyde and Arvil covered Fargo with revolvers, Leon handed the Henry and Fargo’s gun belt and Colt to Tyrel.

“My boys aim to have some fun with you, too. Jethro and Toby in particular. They can’t wait to show you how they liked bein’ shot.”

“Leave him alone,” Devona said, still inside the shed.

Leon turned. “Damn it. Didn’t I tell you to come out of there?” When she did not respond, he said,

“Why are women so pigheaded? What do you hope to accomplish? If you’re not out here in ten seconds, I’ll have my boys drag you and your girl out by the hair. So help me God.”

Holding Gwen close, Devona eased on through and stood trembling with anger. “I wish I had a gun. I’d shoot you, and hang the consequences.”

“I believe you would,” Hinkle said gleefully. “That’s a good sign. I like a gal with spunk. My Agnes, she used to have it, but she lost it as the years wore on.”

“I will never be your wife,” Devona flatly declared.

“Agnes felt that way when we first met but I taught her how to think right and do my biddin’.” Leon smiled at the hellhounds. “Just as I’ve taught them to do my biddin’.
